Lost childhood: the distress of Roma families in Satu Mare
There are many Roma families in Satu Mare, some of whom live in building ruins without windows or doors. After school, there is no one to look after the children. They have no homework supervision, no liasion, no afternoon program. In this environment, it is easy for children to slip into more poverty and a lack of prospects.
Childcare by the Malteser Satu Mare
Around 80 children and young people come to the St. Joseph Youth Centre every day after school. They are given a warm meal and homework supervison. They can shower and wash their clothes. A nurse looks after their health. For many children, this leads to an improvement in their school performance and social behaviour.
Care for families in need
Malteser Satu Mare also provides extremely poor families and elderly people in need with everything they need to survive. This ranges from warm food and firewood to medicines, nappies and clothing.
Kindergarten project
Co-Financing of meals in the kindergarten, which ensures that children can be admitted and cared for.
Children are given the opportunity for social development and parents the chance to work. Help is provided regardless of ethnicity, and prejudices on all sides must be overcome. For children, this offer is often the only way out of the most difficult circumstances, but also provides access to upbringing, education and social participation.
Satu Mare logistics hub for war-realted emergency aid for Ukraine
In 2022, a warehouse was acquired in Satu Mare with the help of the Csilla v. Boeselager Stiftung. Relief supplies from all over Europe are delivered to this warehouse. Here they are transhipped and delivered to Ukraine. The warehouse offers the possibility of interim storage before their transport to Beregovo in Ukraine.
The relief supplies are durable food, hygiene products and clothing, esp. for winter.
Christmas parcels for the needy
At Christmas, the situation is particularly difficult for those in need. It is cold and dark. While "normal" families can afford a nice celebration, poverty becomes a particular burden.
This is why the Malteser International in Satu Mare pack Christmas parcels for over 700 people every year. This includes around 500 children who would otherwise get no Christmas present. Thanks to the mostly voluntary commitment, children from Roma families, old people and orphans are given a little light in the darkness of the cold winter months.
